The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation has been a part of Saskatchewan since 1960. When it was first introduced, crop insurance covered 25 areas of the province and insured just three crops. Today insurance is offered province-wide on more than 20 crops with new crops and varieties added yearly. (More History)

From the beginning, early in World War II, the movement known as the agricultural green revolution, we witnessed the development of a more than conventional agriculture, as is usually called, would call industrial. This was mainly the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, production of new varieties more attractive appearance and the progressive mechanization of the crop practiced: monoculture.

Due to the indiscriminate use of fertilizers and all kinds of chemicals are the following problems in both surface and underground waters:
- Accumulation of nitrates and phosphates, resulting in a loss of portability.
- Eutrophication of inland waters and coastal seas, the increase to harmful levels of organic and inorganic products derived from sewage and agricultural fertilizers, causing severe changes in the characteristics of the medium and oxygen in deep water.

Occurs due to the gradual decrease of the energy / energy used in its production, which is disturbing considering the one hand it is fossil fuels, and therefore limited to a specified period of decades, and secondly, that fertilizers, mainly nitrogen, are products of high energy consumption. Thus, nitrogen consumes 15 to 20 termias.kg-1, phosphorus 3 to 15 termias.kg-1 and potassium from 1 to 2 termias.kg-1, and these fertilizers are 20% to 50% of farm inputs from outside the sector and respond to 24% of total energy consumption of the farm.
